Natalia Ellison talks music, fashion and heartache as ‘Beat’ gets up close and personal in an exclusive interview with the Geordie star!
So Natalia, recent split with Jamie T, are you prepared to talk about it?
Yeah, I mean it’s been a couple of months now, and obviously I’m still not completely over it, how can anyone get over a break up so quickly?
What you’re saying is that you’re still in love with him?
I wouldn’t say I’m in love with him, but it wouldn’t be natural if I said that I didn’t still have feelings for him. It wasn’t my decision to call it a day, so it has taken a while for it to sink in. But at least now I’m on my feet again, and I’m so excited for my album to be released on Monday.
Speaking of the album, rumour is that all of you’re songs are about Jamie, is this true?
The majority of songs on this album I did write when we were going through the split, but that’s not to say that they’re about him. It’s a lot easier to do song writing when you’re going through a tough time, it gives you inspiration and the songs become more meaningful. I think my fans are really going to enjoy this album.
So have you got you’re eye on anyone else? A little bird tells me that you and Chipmunk were getting a bit friendly?
(Blushes) I seen Chipmunk a couple of weeks ago at a gig, and he was so lovely and had me laughing all night, but I don’t think I’d ever go there; he’s more like a friend to me. He’s too young for me anyway! I’m just concentrating on my album to be honest, I’m sure something will come up soon!
Showbiz is full of temptations. Have you ever taken drugs?
In my younger years, yeah. I followed the crowd and everyone was doing it. But I wouldn’t dream of it now, also my dad was a policeman and told me horror stories that put me off for life.
When was the last time you cried?
Last week watching X Factor, I couldn’t believe Lloyd was voted out, he didn’t deserve it!
What kind of music are we to expect on the new album? Ballads, Upbeat..?
There are a variety of genres in there, which is why it is my favourite album so far. I wanted to record songs that would really show off my voice, and also some that are catchy and that people can dance to. So yeah, there’s a range.
Are there any collaborations there?
No not on this album, maybe the next one? (Laughs)
If there were any artist you could collaborate with, who would it be?
Hmm, I dunno, this is a tough one. Erm, I’d love to work with the likes of Whitney Houston, but I think she would probably just show me up! Ha! I’d also love to work with coldplay, they’re lyrics are so inspirational and you can listen to them any day of the week. I’ll just have to wait and see. I wouldn’t mind writing with Neyo, he’s really deep.
Ooh, we’ll look forward to that! Who have you been star-struck by?
I don’t really get star struck anymore, but I do admire a lot of people and to think that we’re all in the same industry is amazing!
We see you’ve got your own clothing line, talk to us about it?
I like to think it is original. I designed it so that it fits in with this seasons range, but at the same time I made it my own. Even the shops on the high streets are becoming quite expensive, so I’d like to think my pricing is quite reasonable too.
So if we’re on a bargain hunt, we know where to look?
(Laughs) Yeah.
If you’re not wearing your own clothing range, where is your favourite place to shop?
I like high street like everyone else. Topshop is my fav place to shop!
What’s the most expensive thing you’ve bought since making it big?
Ohh this sounds vain but probably my 6K Vivienne Westwood dress. I love it, and I’ve worn it once!
So you’ve got an album coming, a clothing range, anything else up your sleeve?
I’d love to do a documentary, but I’m still working on that! I dunno, I’ll just have to wait to see what the futures got in store for me! (Laughs) Ooh I wanna work in the film industry too, but I doubt that will ever happen. I want to become an icon for young people.
Would you ever consider having cosmetic surgery?
It depends how I feel when I get to that age, I suppose a bit of botox wouldn’t do me any harm!
Did you have a back-up plan in case singing didn’t work out?
Yeah, I finished my A-levels at school, so if it did happen to end tomorrow, I’ll always have them to fall back on and start something new.
Has fame affected your ability to lead a normal life?
I don’t do anything different to when I wasn’t famous, the only difference is that I get recognized anywhere I go, but that doesn’t bother me. I love my fans and it’s nice to talk to them and get feedback on what they think of my new material.
How does it feel being nominated for best female artist?
It’s amazing! I never in a million years could have wished for anything better. I don’t think I stand much chance of winning though, there are some pretty incredible and feisty artists up against me, but I’m just so grateful for the nomination!

I have analysed a few magazine covers in order to help me get a good idea of what kind of style is needed to be successful.
I have chosen to analyse 'Top of the pops' magazine as it is one of the most common music magazines of today. We can tell it was well known, as the image of the band on the front cover is covering the title, which means that the audience will already know the name of the magazine.
There are only a few diffrent fonts used and a limited use of colours; pink yellow and white on the cover, which is a common convetion of a magazine cover. There are only a few types of fonts used. For example they have used a large bold font for 'No more secrets' because they want to grab the readers attention and by reading this they will want to buy the magazine.
They have used a long shot of the artist on the front, which isn't common for a front cover, however is works well becasue the band are so famous and well known.
I would say the target audience in this magazine are teen girls, as there are teen boys on the front cover, and thecolours used have connotations of female.
Blender is a very different magazine to 'top of the pops' however they are both music magazines, and blender is very popular in america. Again there is only 3 colours used on the cover which is common for a magazine cover, and also blender stuck to its theme by keeping a white background, which also gives emphasis on the female artist. The blue font makes the title stands out to the reader, however we can tell it is a well known magazine as the artist on the cover, taylor swift, is covering the title. There are only two types of font used, which again keeps it minimilised. We see that the boldest font indicate the main stories, whereas the smaller font tell us about other things which can be found in the magazine. One of the main common conventions of a magazine is the barcode, which is out of the way of the main happenings on the page, however it is essential that it is included.
